Why a Little ā€˜Me Timeā€™ is Important for your Health and Well Being

By Aurelia Williams

As mothers, it is in our very nature to nurture and care for others. We play doctor, cook, chauffeur, teacher, lawyer, and the occasional referee as well, and yet most of us donā€™t take time off for ourselves. I bet you can remember the last time you did a load of laundry, the last time one of your little ones gave you a hug or perhaps the last time one of your kids did a little artwork on the wall (smile), but when was the last time you took time out for you?

It isnā€™t selfish to carve out a little ā€˜me timeā€™ ā€“ it is actually a great way to nurture yourself and a wonderful way to rejuvenate yourself. As a matter of fact, it is very important to be sure to take time out for yourself. I made a vow a long time ago to be sure to take time for myself, away from home. I have a loving husband and 4 children and I make sure to do something for me monthly (often times more). Whether I am alone or with girlfriends, I find the time that I spend dedicated to me priceless. My girlfriends and I have created what we call a ā€˜Girls Day Outā€™! This is where you pal around with your friend or friends and just have fun (childless fun). Just imagine being able to drink an entire cup of tea or coffee before it gets cold or actually eating your entire meal without having to share it.

Be sure to steal a few hours a week for yourself to get away. If for some reason you canā€™t leave the house, perhaps just take some quiet time for yourself after the children are in bed and treat yourself to a good book, a bubble bath, a nice movie or anything else that you get enjoyment from.

You remember that saying? If mama ainā€™t happy, nobody is happy? Well, I tend to agree with it, so try to take time off when you can to replenish your mind, body and spirit. Usually after just a few hours of ā€˜me timeā€™, you will feel totally renewed, rejuvenated and ready to tackle just about ANYTHING (even that pile of laundry!)

Thanks for sharing a good article Aurelia. I definitely need to take some time for “me”. This is something that I do not do often enough. You are so right about if moma ain’t happy, nobody is happy. I agree with you wholeheartly. I look forward to reading more of your articles.

Thanks for reading Tally! Me time is often overlooked by moms but it is the one way that we can inexpensively give to ourselves what it truly needed. šŸ™‚

It took me a while, but I’ve learned my mental being needs a ME time. I try to schedule a day for me once a month. I like going to the movies by myself. I can enjoy the popcorn and not have to take anyone to the bathroom or chase someone up the aisle.

I’m working on trying the me time at home. It’s hard because the 3yr old doesn’t understand the locked bathroom door. He wants in. LOL

    Nice article, thanks.

Love this blog. I have ME Time for 2 hours, meditation, yoga, tea time and a good book, maybe a little shopping and some lunch with friends. So important that is why I love giving to my family once they get home, mama has been taking care of.

I TAKE ME TIME OUT ON A WEEKLY BASIS. SOME OF YOU MAY NOT THINK THAT THIS IS CONSIDERED ME TIME BUT FOR ME IT IS VERY PACIFYING. ON MONDAYS I GET A HOTEL ROOM TO DO MY HOMEWORK AND STUDY FOR EXAMS. ON WEDNESDAYS OR SUNDAYS I GO TO BINGO. I GET MY NAILS AND FEET DONE ABOUT EVERY 3 WEEKS. I SPEND A DAY WITH MY HUSBAND AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK. AND ON THE SABBATH I REST LIKE I NEVER HAVE BEFORE!!!

I certainly need more me time…I have a three yr old daughter, have moved from one state to another, and have had no family or friends in either state…at least now, I am beginning to develop a few. However, with adrenal fatigue, it’s hard enough to keep up with what needs to be done, let alone taking the time for me….Would love to have more time for yoga, to read, and baths….and prayer! I keep praying for more me time – lol!

LaShaunda thanks for reading the post and commenting.

Carving out some time for youself is very important. If you find it hard to get a full day to yourself dont sneeze at stealing a few minutes for yourself when you can while your little one naps or goes down for the . Pop in a nice CD during his naptime and just close your eyes and relax. What about a bubble bath while reading your favorite book?

  9. Aurelia Williams February 24, 2010 11:34 p02

Lisa – that is awesome! I always refer to our bodies as cars and our “me time” is our gas šŸ™‚ Sounds like you’ve got a full tank.

I think the superwoman trap caused many ladies to think it is a requirement to ignore themselves in the quest to be all and do all for everybody else. This can not only lead to physical illness but also emotional illness…thus why I believe you can’t effectively take care of anyone else until you first be sure you are loving you…this mean “Me Time” everyday…if no more than 15 minutes to do some deep breathing, meditation or just take a walk to clear the mind.
Once a week I do what I call the “premium”…this requires about an hour and a half to two hours. The premium consist of a good soak (love that lavender essential oil) with some relaxing music (I made a couple good CD finds at the Dollar Tree) soy candles to set the mood and end it with a self-heating foot mitt treatment (the mitt uses tap water and last 30 minutes). I can’t tell you how good it feels…it reminds me of a saying of my mother…you feel like new money.
Loving others really is better when you show love for yourself.

Hey there Ofelia – “Me time” is what you make of it. I think it is great that you carve out that time for yourself to focus on what you want to focus on. Sounds like a great schedule to me šŸ™‚

Belinda – that is great and your post rings very true. Your ā€œpremiumā€ sounds delightful. Thanks for reading and commenting

April – thanks for your comment. Have you asked around the community to see if there is a babysitting co-op? I know that a lot of parents in communities have them and they swap out babysitting time. It can be hard in a new environment to get used to things so hopefully the friends that you are making there will grow and grow. In the meantime… can you try to steal a few minutes for yourself during nap time or perhaps waking up before you little one and do something nice for yourself while the house is still quiet. Good luck!

  14. Nikki February 25, 2010 11:34 p02

You are so right Aurelia. If we don’t take time to fill our own cup, we don’t have anything to offer anyone else.
