Many people are battling with hypertension these days, especially with African Americans who seem to be at higher risk for this serious condition more that other races and happens at an earlier age. The good news is it can be controlled and even prevented. With high blood pressure putting you at a higher risk for strokes, heart attacks, kidney failure and even death it is so important to know your number and have your blood pressure checked regularly. Hypertension can be considered the silent killer because a person can feel perfectly healthy and not know they have high blood pressure. It is so important to live a healthy lifestyle to help control it. Doing things like staying active, maintaining a healthy weight and dropping bad habits like alcohol and smoking all helps.

Read your ingredients on all packages. The diet should be low in saturated fat, sugar and salt. Focus on a low fat and cholesterol diet. It is important to increase fiber intake.
Avoid high stress levels. Try meditation, getting a massage, listening to calming music, deep breathing and exercise.
